How do you reconcile living green/eco friendly with living in a capitalist/modern/busy society?
@curiosity, thanks for that post, it was interesting to read and good to know someone shares some of my views, but it doesn't exactly answer my question.
Actually, nevermind, it does address it somewhat.
That's a terrific question that should be posed to everyone -starting in grade school and all the way up to the leaders of every country (yes, even the developing ones that believe that capitalization and globalization is the way to go). It certainly should have been posed by our fawning media throughout the entire campaign for the past 6 months to whittle down the candidates for the presidental nomination of the two main parties.
First -kudos to you for asking what may be the most profound question of our time -certainly for the so-called western democracies!
I believe you can do both ... but certainly not out at the extremes.
That is, if you want to be 100% green/eco-friendly then you must dismiss capitalism (at a minimum) from your life. Capitalism's mantra is "infinite expansion" and that's simply code for "relentless consumerism." As such, capitalism is all about production, use, waste. Yep, that pretty much sums up a capitalist mindset for what re-cycling is.
On the other hand, I believe you can remain in a busy, modern society and be either a "reluctant" or "anti" capitalist and focus on living a green/eco-friendly life while promoting such a lifestyle within your sphere of influence.
At first you will suffer the ridicule and dismissal from the unexamined folks who simply choose to blow you off because of your philosophy. However, please know -and constantly remind yourself- that, as one person out of the current 6.6 billion on earth, you will be adhering to a moral obligation to care for the planet today so that others can enjoy it tomorrow. In fact, I find it hard to believe that every parent is not green/eco-friendly! What -they had children so that their children could one day live in misery.
On a larger scale, the world is fast approaching a time when capitalism will not be able to sustain much momentum ... again, the notion of "infinite expansion" is a pipedream ... an illusion that is simply doublespeak for consumerism. Soon, the illusion will truly be a "delusion" as the hardcore capitalists will not be able to reconcile the inevitable changes that come from a shrinking resource pool (earth) while populations continue to rise.
Simply consider water and oil in their present states ... one is absolutely necessary for human life, the other, an artifact of making human life convenient ... both are becomingly increasingly hard to come by.
As such, if the fat-cats who have it all (so to speak) are compelled to drink from a dwindling water supply and their capitalistic ways can't buy them water ... then they, when the supply of pure water is rationed or non-existant, like everyone else on earth, will have about three days left to drive their gas-guzzling cars ... into eternity.
I believe it was Karl Marx -or maybe Lenin -who quipped: "a capitalist will sell you the rope to hang him with."
